The term lime is generally used to cover all aspects of the element calcium the term lime includes limestone (calcium carbonate - CaCO3), burnt lime (calcium oxide - CaO), and slaked or hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2). All of these materials are used in large quantities both in New Zealand and overseas.
Lime is generally of marine origin - that is, it is formed under the sea as accumulations of the Shelly marine organisms over long periods. For this reason, fossilized forms of sea life can be readily found in many limestone’s, although older limestone’s have generally been squeezed so much during their geological history that they have recrystallised into hard limestone’s or even marbles in which the remains of sea life are no longer recognisable.
