Bhutan possesses abundant natural resources and follows a strict forest conservation policy, with approximately 70% forest cover and limited areas allocated for commercial management. This project study explores the potential for sustainable charcoal production by increasing the utilization of commercially managed forest resources to reduce dependence on imported forest-based products, particularly charcoal, while supporting economic diversification.
The study evaluates cost-efficient locations for charcoal production through optimization modelling and assesses the feasibility of decentralized production facilities across Bhutan. Results indicate that sustainable domestic charcoal production can contribute significantly toward reducing imports while maintaining conservation objectives. Charcoal production is identified as a value-added activity supported by efficient resource utilization, controlled production methods, and opportunities for rural economic development.
Charcoal is produced through carbonization, where wood is heated under controlled oxygen conditions using ovens, retorts, or kilns. The process converts wood into gases, liquid by-products, and solid carbon material. Different technologies are available for carbonization, including continuous and batch systems designed for efficient conversion of wood materials into charcoal. The project focuses on establishing a technically viable charcoal production unit using appropriate processing technology while considering resource availability, environmental impacts, and market opportunities.
