Linen yarn is produced from the long cellulose fibers located beneath the bark of the stem of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The fibers are separated from the woody stem and inner pith through processes that may involve water or chemical treatment, followed by washing, preparation, spinning, and weaving. Linen is valued for its cool, comfortable feel, crisp appearance, durability, and ability to become softer and more supple with use. It is widely used for apparel, toweling, household textiles, tablecloths, bedsheets, thread, cordage, and twine.
Flax grows particularly well in cool, humid climates and moist, well-plowed soils. Important flax-growing regions include Poland, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the British Isles. Belgium is traditionally regarded by many as a source of very fine-quality flax fiber, while Scottish and Irish linen also have a long-standing reputation.
Linen has a history extending back at least five millennia. Ancient Egyptians processed flax into fine fabric, while linen was also valued by the Greeks, Romans, and peoples of the Middle East. Before industrialization, flax was cultivated, processed, spun, dyed, woven, and sewn largely by hand. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mechanized cotton production became substantially less expensive and contributed to the decline of linen production in the United States. Today, linen fabrics used in the United States are largely imported from flax-growing and textile-producing countries.
