Absorbent cotton, also known as surgical cotton or cotton wool, is primarily used for medical purposes in hospitals, nursing homes, dispensaries and other healthcare institutions. Its high fluid-absorbency makes it suitable for surgical dressings, wound cleaning and personal hygiene. The product should be soft, chemically inert and non-irritating, with manufacturing processes designed to remove external and organic impurities and render the cotton hydrophilic.
Raw materials include lint cotton, cotton linters, comber cotton and other processed cotton materials. These materials are cleaned, washed, bleached, hydro-extracted, dried, carded, sterilized and packed to produce surgical cotton. Surgical bandages and cotton gauze are also manufactured from suitable cotton cloth and are widely used for dressing wounds and ulcers. Absorbent cotton additionally finds applications in sanitary napkins, beauty parlours, tailoring and artistic novelty items.
