Pearlescent pigments are specialty pigments known for their superior whiteness, brilliance, coverage, and unique optical effects, ranging from fine-grained lustre to bold silvery white sparkle. These pigments can create pearlescent and iridescent appearances when incorporated into suitable application media.
Pearlescent pigments are non-toxic, inert materials that can be blended with various viscous, transparent mediums and applied to multiple surfaces. They offer a wide range of finishes, including metallic sheens, pearlescent shimmers, and decorative effects. Fine pearl pigments provide excellent physical stability and are suitable for water-based paints, solvent-based paints, and powder coatings.
In plastics applications, mica-based pearlescent pigments provide optimum lustre, brightness, and colour intensity with particle sizes generally ranging from 10 to 40 microns. Smaller particles create smooth, silky effects, while larger particles produce sparkle and glitter effects. These pigments are compatible with thermoplastics and can also be used in thermosetting materials such as unsaturated polyester, acrylic, urethane, and epoxy systems. Beyond plastics and coatings, pearlescent pigments are widely used in textile printing, paper coatings, leather, and cosmetic applications.
