Sodium percarbonate, represented by the formula (2Na2CO3 • 3H2O2), is a white crystalline compound that releases hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate when dissolved in water. It was first synthesized in 1899 by Ukrainian chemist Sebastian Moiseevich Tanatar and has since become an important ingredient in eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry detergents due to its oxidising and bleaching properties.
The compound is widely valued as an oxygen-based bleaching agent because it provides effective stain removal without the harsh effects associated with chlorine bleach. Sodium percarbonate is a white, odourless crystalline powder with high water solubility and mild alkalinity. When dissolved, it decomposes into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate, making it suitable for various cleaning applications.
The manufacturing process involves preparing sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide solutions, followed by controlled mixing under specific temperature conditions to form sodium percarbonate crystals. The precipitated product is separated, dried to remove moisture, and packaged for distribution. Due to its cleaning efficiency and environmentally favourable decomposition products, sodium percarbonate continues to be an important material for industrial and household applications.
