Camphor is a white, crystalline substance with a strong scent and pungent taste that is sourced from wood camphor laurel and other related trees of the laurel family. These trees are more readily found in China, India, Mongolia, Japan and Taiwan and a variety of this fragrant evergreen tree is grown in Southern United States like Florida.
Camphor is an aromatic, volatile, terpene ketone derived from the wood of Cinnamomum camphora or synthesized from turpentine.
Oil of turpentine is a mixture of volatile terpenic distillates of resin obtained from pines. It is generally composed of α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene and camphene. It possess antimicrobial and larvicidal properties and induces inflammation in high dosage.
Camphor is processed through steam distillation, purification and sublimation of the wood, twigs and bark of the tree. Today, camphor is chemically manufactured from turpentine oil. Modern uses include camphor as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose, as a moth repellent, as an antimicrobial substance, in embalming, and in fireworks.
