INTRODUCTION
Teak, (Tectona grandis) belongs to family Verbenaceae. The name Tectona is derived from the Greek "tekton", meaning a carpenter, Grandis means "large" and refers to the size of the tree. In different languages it is called by different names. In Hindi -sagun, Marathi -sag, sagwan, Bengali - saguna, Tamil -Tekku, Malayalam -Thekke, Coorg –Teyga and Burmese -Tyun.
It is a very important tree and these days many people are getting involved in its cultivation. It's wood is considered one of the best wood in the world and has got very high market value.
Teak is a large deciduous tree, often considered the king of timber trees. The heartwood is one of the most naturally durable woods of the world. Good quality teak is very durable, and is popular in any workshop. Now-a-days cultivation of teak has already gained momentum. At this stage, the detailed information about cultivation, wood quality, its uses may prove very useful to the fanners, as well as to the common people.
Teak (Tectona) is a genus of tropical hardwood trees in the mint family. It is a useful indicator of plantation trends. The yellowish brown timber with good grains and texture from teak trunk is used in the manufacture of outdoor furniture, boat decks, and other articles where weather resistance is desired. It is also used for indoor flooring and as a veneer for indoor furnishings. Teak is propagated mainly from seeds. Germination of the seeds involves pretreatment to remove dormancy arising from the thick pericarp. Pretreatment involves alternate wetting and drying of the seed. The seeds are soaked in water for 12 hours and then spread to dry in the sun for 12 hours. This is repeated for 10-14 days and then the seeds are sown in shallow germination beds of coarse peat covered by sand. The seeds then germinate after 15 to 30 days.
