Sugarcane bagasse is a major agricultural residue generated by the sugar industry in India and is widely recognized as a valuable raw material for pulp, paper, and sustainable tableware production. It is the fibrous material remaining after sugarcane juice extraction and contains cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, making it suitable for various industrial applications.
Bagasse is a low-cost and renewable fiber source compared with conventional papermaking materials such as wood and other agricultural fibers. Bleached bagasse pulp can be utilized in the manufacture of high-quality cultural papers, living papers, sanitary products, and other paper-based applications. With suitable processing techniques, it can also be used for coated art base paper and newspaper production.
Due to its fiber characteristics, chemical composition, and lower silicon content compared with many other straw fibers, bagasse offers advantages in pulping and bleaching processes. Proper depithing is an important step because bagasse pith can affect paper strength, opacity, chemical consumption, and manufacturing efficiency. The mature processing technology and suitability of bagasse for chemical, mechanical, and chemi-mechanical pulping make it an important sustainable alternative fiber source for the pulp and paper industry.
