The transportation sector remains highly dependent on fossil fuels, creating a strategic need for alternative and sustainable energy sources. Biofuels provide an opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while supporting environmental sustainability, employment generation, agricultural development, and waste-to-wealth initiatives.
Ethanol is a major biofuel produced through the fermentation of sugars by yeast or through petrochemical processes such as ethylene hydration. It is widely used as a fuel additive, chemical solvent, antiseptic, disinfectant, and an intermediate in organic synthesis. Ethanol blending with petrol supports energy security, reduces vehicular emissions, and enables participation of local industries and farmers in the energy economy.
The Government of India notified the National Policy on Biofuels–2018 on 4.06.2018, establishing an indicative target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2030 under the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Program. Grain-based ethanol production using broken rice as a raw material can also enable recovery of high-quality food-grade rice protein before starch conversion into ethanol, maltodextrin, and related products. This feasibility report focuses on establishing a grain-based ethanol production facility as a Green Field Project.
