Cellulose Acetate is an amorphous, colorless, transparent, glossy, and moderately hard thermoplastic with good clarity but has only moderate chemical resistance and UV stability. Owing to its high moisture absorption the usual difficulties of dimensional changes arise.
Cellulose acetate is an insoluble cellulose derivative regarded as a nontoxic, nonirritant, and biodegradable material. It is heat-resistant and less hygroscopic. Cellulose acetate is partially acetylated cellulose, in which the acetyl content ranges from 29.0% to 44.8%, corresponding to mono-, di-, and triacetate.
Cellulose acetate is the most important cellulose ester. The cellulose is first ‘activated’ in aqueous acetic acid to ensure uniform acetylation. It is then dehydrated and reacted with acetic anhydride using a catalyst (e.g., sulfuric acid) in a solvent (e.g., anhydrous acetic acid)
Cellulose acetate (CA) in combination with plasticizers, such as diethyl and dimethyl phthalate, produces a plastics material which can be heat softened and forced under pressure into a cool mould. CA plastics are tough with deep gloss and high transparency. They possess a ‘feel’ which is different to other plastics and which is often described as more ‘natural.
The global cellulose acetate market was valued at USD 5.07 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.0% during the forecast period. Cellulose acetate is used as a substitute for plastic across various industries as it is biodegradable. It is chemically produced made by the reaction of cellulose with acetic anhydride & acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst. The major factors propelling the growth of the industry globally include the growth in developing economies, technological advancements across various applications, and growth in the product requirement. The rising demand for natural plastics on account of their characteristics is further expected to drive the cellulose acetate market growth.
