INTRODUCTION
The resins which are available in powder and liquid form are known as Epoxy Resins and CNSL have also worked on the same type of resins. Although the resins in powder and liquid form are not new products but in order to make them little modified and made theirown patented product. But so far as the conventional resin is concerned, the epoxy resin can also be prepared on small scale.
The resins of this nature are prepared from the raw materials bisphenol and epi-chlorohydrin. The bisphenol is available indigeneously whereas epi-chlorohydrin has to be imported. In order to save foreign exchange, CNSL traced out a cheapest way of making resin. The propylene is chlorinated in the plant itself and this chlorinated propylene is used for making resins in combination with bisphenol.
In the field of resins of epoxy type, there are two broad classes: Solid resins, which are modified with other resins and unsaturated fatty acids to make coating materials; and Liquid resins which are combined with curing agents such as diamine, dibasic anhydrides, polyamides and polysulphides for adhesives. The liquid resins are preferred for adhesives and plastics and uses. Theses viscous liquids are converted to solid resins by reacting with amine or acid anhydride hardeners. No pressure need be applied. Some of the amine hardening agents begin to take effect on the resin at room temperature, so that it is possible to make very large castings without using an oven.
Theses resins get their name from the fact that they are made from epoxides or compounds containing the epoxy type structure.
The intermediates which are also called epoxy resins require "hardening agents" for further reaction to form the finish products. These hardners are of two classes the diamines and the dibasic anhydride; the latter require amine catalysts and higher temperature for curing while the diamines will cure at room temperature under their own heat of reaction.
These types of resins were introduced commercially after Second World War and since then several developments are made. There resins impart exceptional chemical resistance, good adhesion and flexibility and are becoming increasingly population.
