Copper is an important non-ferrous metal with wide industrial applications and ranks third after iron and aluminium in terms of quantity consumed. Its reddish appearance, malleability, ductility, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, and resistance to corrosion make it a valuable industrial material. Copper combines with various elements to form a wide range of copper minerals and ores.
Copper ingots are generally required by non-ferrous casting units manufacturing engineering components from brass, gun metal and bronze, as well as by agricultural machinery, automobile and railway industries. They are also used in the manufacture of rods, tubes, strips and wires. Copper ingots produced from copper scrap are generally classified as commercial-quality or secondary-quality ingots rather than electrolytic copper.
