INTRODUCTION
Stannous Chloride is available in two forms: anhydrous stannous chlorid (Sncl2) & stannous chloride dihydrate (Sncl2.2H2o), also called tin crystals or tin salts. Both forms are sometimes used interchangeably. Anhydreous stannous chloride in the preferred material when stability, concentration & adaptability are important. Even after long storage, changes in the stannous tin content of anhydrous stannous chloride are extermely low.
Stannous chlorides is one of the important commercial salt which is utilized in various electroplating applications as a source of tin metal. It is also commonly employed as a reducing agent in the manufacture of chemicals.
Stannous chloride is prepared in the form of an anhydrous salt by reacting in pure molten tin with chlorine gas or hydrochloric acid gas. Stannous chloride, monohydrate is obtained by dissolving tin in hydrochloric acid solution. Both the salts are white crystalline products.
Tin chloride is an important electroplating salt which provides and excellent protective coating for iron and steel.
It is used for coating cooking kettles, food containers, refrigerator coils and automobile parts.
A thin coating of tin on steel prior to painting greatly improves the resistance of the paint to destructive agencies and increase the life of steel. Electro tinning of steel sheet for export purposes is cheaper than the usual greasing method, & it is also not necessary tomove the tin coatin for using the sheets.
The importance of the electroplytec process for tin deposition has been steadily growing in USA. It has almost the same importance as tinning by the hot dip process.
