Pig iron is a primary iron product obtained through the reduction of iron oxide in the presence of limestone, generally using a blast furnace, electric smelter, or low-shaft furnace. It serves as a fundamental raw material for steel production and cast iron manufacturing. The term “pig iron” originated from the traditional method of casting molten iron into small blocks arranged in a pattern resembling a sow and her piglets.
Pig iron contains controlled amounts of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, manganese, and sulphur, making it suitable for further metallurgical processing. A significant application of pig iron is as a feed material in steel manufacturing, while it is also used in processes related to sponge iron production. The quality and composition of pig iron play an important role in determining its suitability for different industrial applications.
In sponge iron manufacturing, pig iron is used as a raw material containing approximately 3 to 4% carbon, 1 to 3% silicon, 0.3 to 1.5% phosphorus, 0.1 to 1.0% manganese, and less than 1% sulphur. Due to its importance in steel and iron-based industries, pig iron remains a critical component of the metallurgical value chain.
