Concrete admixtures are chemical substances available in powder or liquid form that are added during concrete mixing to enhance specific properties or introduce characteristics not present in conventional concrete. They may be added at the batching plant or directly into transit mixers before casting. Concrete admixtures are broadly classified into plasticizers and superplasticizers based on their ability to reduce water content while maintaining or improving concrete workability.
Plasticizers generally reduce water requirements while preserving workability, whereas superplasticizers provide higher water reduction capability and are widely used as high-range water reducers. Modern concrete applications extensively use chemical and mineral additives to improve fresh and hardened concrete properties, including strength, flow, durability, and performance.
Concrete chemical admixtures are used in applications such as ready mix concrete, precast concrete, high performance concrete, shotcrete, and fly ash concrete. Major types of superplasticizers include Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde Condensate (SNF), Sulfonated Melamine Formaldehyde Condensate (SMF), Modified Lignosulfonates (MLS), and Poly Carboxylate Derivatives (PC).
