     Natural  ultramarine  is  derived from  the  mineral,Lapiz Lazuli,  a semi precious stone which has been for Jewellery  and decoration  from  the early times. It has been found  to  contain soda, silica, alumina and sulphur. 

     Soon  after the introduction of the Leblance  soda  Process, blue spots resembling natural ultramarine in colour, were noticed in  soda, furnaces lined with  silicious matirial. This  suggested the possibility of artificial ultramine. 

     Fabrics  lose their brighness and become slightly yellow  in course of time due to sunlight dirt and repeated launderings etc. To counteract this effect bluings are used eg. Ultramarine  blue, Prussiam blue, and aniline blue gives more attactive finisl while ultramarine blue is the cheapest. Ultramarine blue is supplied as such  in powder form. Liquid bluing is produced by dissolving  an active ingredient eg. aniline dye in a suitable solvent, heated in steam facketed kettles, and is bottled in containers. Dry  bluing mayt  be produced by mixing and packaging the dye mixed  with  an extender,  salt  and dextrien in the  required  proportions.  dry bluing  may  also  be produced by dissolving  the  dye  salt  and dextrine  in  solvent and mixing, evaporating the  solvent  in  a vaccum dryer, there by cakes of homogenenous bluing are  obtained which crushed and packed. 

     Ultramarine blue is stable under alkaline conditions execept with  lime.  With lime calcium ultramarine is  obtained,  due  to replacement  of sodium, which is white. To inhibit this  calcined china  clay  may  be incorporated when  required  ultramarine  is unstable   towards  even  weak acids  due  to  decomposition  and liberation  of  Hydrogen  sulphide.  It  is  used  in   laundries, colouring  scrap  bars and flakes,  oap  powders  and  detergents, textile  printing,  bleaching and finishing of textile etc.  and other indutries.
